Welcome to the Tesla Space newsletter, our 99th issue. Ooh, next week sounds like fun.

The Tesla Annual Shareholder Meeting is tomorrow. I’ll be watching.

I will send a special issue about everything there is to learn, along with the fun experiences (it’s always kind of a party), to our Tesla Space Insider members. Join us if you want to get the details early. Otherwise, I’ll catch you up next week.

If you got a ticket to the shareholder meeting, this is what the confirmation invite would have looked like (I didn’t get one myself, of course):

In today’s newsletter:

  • A meteorite hits a Tesla on FSD — yes, really;

  • Is Elon’s comp plan a pass? We’ll find out tomorrow, but there’s an early win by shareholders;

  • Elon says Tesla will have 500 Robotaxis in Austin by the end of this year, and over 1,000 cars in the Bay Area.

  • Giga Berlin send no wastewater to the sewer for a whole year;

  • Robotaxi area expands, Cybertruck gets FSD V14, Elon already at AI8;

  • Cybercab shows off some design changes;

  • Elon warms up for the Moon?

… and lots more, as usual. Enjoy!

X OF THE WEEK

Something special — the X of the week this time will be one of ours:

For some reason, this post went wider on X than any of ours before, I mean 824 reposts and 6.3k likes is quite something or us on X.

The story itself is crazy (and true), too. A meteorite hit a Tesla in Australia while it was on FSD at 68mph, the driver was briefly incapacitated due to the glass that flew on his face, so FSD really helped him avoid the worse. Sadly no camera footage… Here’s another angle of the windscreen:

PS, follow us on X if you haven’t: @TheTeslaSpace.

TESLA NEWS

the new Cyberbear statue @ Tesla Engineering HQ, Palo Alto.

It looks rather likely that Elon’s comp package will be approved tomorrow (although nothing certain, of course) as even Charles Schwab made a public statement of voting together with the board, after a lot of noise was raised in the Tesla community (especially the largest accounts like Sawyer and Jason). threatening to leave it if it doesn’t.

And holy frunk, it actually worked.

In case you missed it, Schwab voted against Elon’s previous packages in 2018 and 2024. At least six of Charles Schwab’s ETFs were expected to vote against Tesla’s Board recommendation to support the compensation plan for Musk this time as well. The six ETFs represent around 7 million Tesla $TSLA shares.

Elon appeared in two podcasts: a 3h18min Joe Rogan episode, and a 90-minute All-In Podcast episode.

Elon’s topics on All-In: Three years of X; Grokipedia; Tesla vote and his future with the company; OpenAI lawsuit and for-profit conversion; AI power efficiency; Self-driving, robotaxis; Bill Gates flips on climate; Solar, nuclear, and the future of energy.

Some quotes of Elon from either:

Elon says Tesla will have 500 Robotaxis in Austin by the end of this year, and over 1,000 cars in the Bay Area.

On Rogan, he talked about Tesla not doing a phone as it will be an AI edge node instead in the future, and also briefly about Roadster being able to fly.

Elon also said Tesla is NOT putting a steering wheel in the Cybercab. “We’re not putting a steering wheel in them. People may think they want to drive their car, but the reality is they don’t.”

Lots more to discover in the episodes, from the conspiracy theories to some nuggets around Tesla & AI

Tesla has introduced a new program called “Tesla Ride” across the U.S. to encourage people to try FSD and the vehicles.

“We'll come to you and take you where you want to go. Hop in the driver's seat and a Tesla Advisor will join you as your co-pilot. They'll walk you through all of the car's latest features including comfort settings, games that kids can play on the touchscreens and Grok Al, your Al companion who can answer all your questions and tell you stories.”

  • More drama: Elon responds to Sam Altman, who said he tried to cancel his Tesla Roadster reservation but couldn’t: "You stole a non-profit" ... and then, "You forgot to mention act 4, where this issue was fixed and you received a refund within 24 hours."

  • Tesla is now offering 2,000 free Supercharger miles in the U.S. if you trade in your gas car and upgrade to a Tesla vehicle.

  • Tesla has announced that starting in 2026, the company will introduce new extended coverage options for the high-voltage batteries, extending protection beyond the standard 8-year warranty.

  • Some great news from Tesla Giga Berlin head, Andre Thierig:

  • And this unprompted testimonial for Tesla diagnostics: “My brothers own an ICE repair shop and dismantle cars in the Detroit area. I’m helping them transition to work on Tesla cars. To my surprise Tesla drastically lowered the cost of Tesla Toolbox 3, their diagnostic software. Only $700 for a year compared to $3000 previously!”

VEHICLES

SpaceX (and xAI for that matter) have taken in a massive fleet of Cybertrucks for employee use — here’s over 250 of them on a video. Elon says "Cybertrucks get preferential parking, as they look much more futuristic than normal cars and are poetically aligned with the stainless steel of Starship." Another video here.

Tesla's Cybercab was spotted testing on public roads for the first time. "This was in Los Altos, California, about 10 minutes from Tesla's Engineering HQ. As would be expected at this stage, a person was in the driver seat."

And Tesla showed Cybercab go through IN-n-Out, a tradition for its vehicles in development some months before production. Wrote “Animal style”.

pretty sure it’s Optimus or other mannequins on the seats.

Cybercab has a slightly different design compared to the old look, here are the details that have changed by Sawyer, based on the images from the IN-N-Out pic of Cybercab that Tesla shared:

  • Front side repeater camera has been moved slightly forward

  • Slightly redesigned front end and light bar area

  • Longer front lower lip

  • Redesigned B-pillar area, which looks to have moved slightly forward

  • No gold paint on tires

  • It looks like the door/window could now be frameless, similar to other current Teslas.

  • Front license plate holder

  • Front amber reflectors near the wheel arch

  • Production-ready looking headlights

  • There are exterior mirrors for now, but likely only because it's required by California law. Whether those will be on there when it goes into production remains to be seen, as the initial cabs will likely be in Austin, TX.

It also seems the hood has been raised, windshield rake, front wiper integration, and corresponding A-Pillar changes.

Now, Cybercab is clearly getting closer to production (Q2 2026 targeted we believe). There is a massive amount of gigacastings produced in Giga Texas for it, we’re seeing over 500 just this week already.

FSD & ROBOTAXI & SOFTWARE

FSD V14 (14.1.5) is now starting to roll out to Cybertrucks, finally. Cybertruck can also now pick a spot and park itself.

Got to love Cybertruck account comments:

While we’re at it, I’ll have to show you this:

I think the cybertruck just became self-aware…

Tesla will allow owners to gift FSD (Supervised) subscriptions by next month.

Cool video: "the literal life-saving quick thinking of FSD v14.1.4. It swiftly reacted to a little puppy jumping out into the middle of the road on a busy Los Angeles city street"

Meanwhile I saw some video on the latest FSD stopping for maple leaves blowing to the road so it does need some more work I guess.

Tesla self-driving can now also reverse to get out of potentially dangerous positions. As on this video of v14.1: “it proceeded thru this intersection to turn left, but the light had gone to red before the turn could be completed. It put itself in reverse and backed up to the “Stop Here on Red” sign/line. Didn’t proceed at a red or impede others.”

Tesla expanded its robotaxi geofence in Austin by 44% for the first time in two months.

Elon adds: "Tesla autonomous driving might spread faster than any technology ever. The hardware foundations have been laid for such a long time that a software update enables self-driving for millions of pre-existing cars in a short period of time."

For robotaxi, Tesla is looking to hire a Senior Insurance Claims Specialist for Robotaxi.

"Play a critical role in managing incident reporting and claim processes for Tesla’s Robotaxi and ride-hailing operations."

On X, Elon also posted:

"Just finished a long AI5 design review with the Tesla California and Texas chip engineers. It’s going to be great.
And AI6 and AI7 will follow in fast succession.
AI8 will be out of this world.”

The fun part with Elon is that he might mean that last AI8 one literally

He also wrote: “Elon says high volume production of Tesla's next-generation AI5 chip will start in 2027, with a small number of units in 2026.

"Slightly different versions of the Tesla AI5 chip will be made at TSMC and Samsung simply because they translate designs to physical form differently, but the goal is that our AI software works identically.

We will have samples and maybe a small number of units in 2026, but high volume production is only possible in 2027.

AI6 will use the same fabs, but achieve roughly 2X performance. Aiming for a fast follow to AI5, so hopefully mid 2028 for volume production of AI6.

AI7 will need different fabs, as it is more adventurous."

MUSKONOMY

SpaceX

Starlink is offering $0 upfront hardware costs for new customers in select areas in the U.S.—this includes everything you need.

Elon turns his new focus to… the Moon?
Stay tuned, but SpaceX might go for a moon base soon.

The Boring Company:

Tesla is finally using Cybertrucks in The Boring Company Las Vegas tunnels. This comes as Boring Company is finally running FSD on its tunnels (mostly?), and Cybertruck also just got some…
