Welcome to the Tesla Space newsletter, our 119th issue.
We’re sorry for leaving you hangin’ on Tuesday — back in action and making up for it now with a fully Tesla-packed email!
PS, next week, we will have a scheduled change, and this email will arrive in your inbox early Thursday morning.
For a good reason, though: the Q1 2026 Earnings Call is on Wednesday evening and those are always juicy in details that I’ll want to tell you about.
If there’s something truly breaking news out of that call, I’ll also send out an Insider Alert email to our Tesla Space Insiders (join here if you haven’t).
Here’s what’s on the Tesla Space menu today:
Tesla FSD (S) is now approved in the Netherlands, and the rest of Europe is to follow soon;
Model S & X get a fair farewell with a Signature edition;
The Affordable Tesla (Model 2 or whatever you call it) rumors resurface;
Model Y L or something similar spotted in Giga Texas;
Intel joins Terafab project, and AI5 reaches tapeout (ready for mass production);
Tesla Supercharging calculator lets you map out how much your own Supercharging site would cost
… and lots more. Enjoy!

TESLA FSD (S) NOW LIVE IN NETHERLANDS

… and it’s a bigger deal than you’d think.
The Dutch regulator RDW approved Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) in the Netherlands right before midnight in Europe on April 10th, and concludes the system is safer than other driver assistance systems.

The rollout for first owners. has already begun. Here are some videos gathered for you from what the local drivers in NL have shared.

Here’s a part of the RDW statement (bold emphasis ours):
"Due to the continuous strict monitoring of the driver in the vehicle, the system is safer than other driver assistance systems. We have thoroughly researched and checked this system, more than a year and a half. Safety is paramount for the RDW. The proper use of this driver's system makes a positive contribution to road safety."
The type approval for Tesla's driver assistance system is currently only valid in the Netherlands. To enable the use of this driver assistance system throughout the entire European Union, further steps still need to be completed:
The RDW submits the application for authorization within the entire European Union to the European Commission.
All member states vote on this application
Approval requires a majority vote within the responsible committee.
If voted in favor, the driver assistance system is valid in all Member States, meaning it may be driven in all Member States of the European Union.
However, most European countries can actually fast-track that by starting their own processes based on the RDW findings without needing to do their own tests, which means we will see a lot more countries get the FSD (Supervised) train going over the next few months.
Some countries seem quicker to react, some countries, (like Norway) seem to play the wait-and-see for a wider rollout.
And not just Europe, there are many countries across the world (like Japan, for example), that base some of their regulations in recognition of these regulatory findings from RDW, so this will be fun to witness.
With this, Tesla FSD (Supervised) is now available for Tesla owners in:
🇺🇸 United States
🇨🇦 Canada
🇲🇽 Mexico
🇵🇷 Puerto Rico
🇰🇷 South Korea
🇨🇳 China
🇦🇺 Australia
🇳🇿 New Zealand
🇳🇱 Netherlands
This has been long in the making. While RDW says this current process took 18 and some months, we’ve seen Musk talk of working with RDW to get it approved since…
* checks notes *
2019!

Of course back the, it was a far, far earlier version, so it would’ve gone through the same iteration cycle as it did in the US.
But at the same time, European Tesla owners are also in somewhat of an unique position — while the FSD (Supervised) has been developed right under the eyes and hands of US Tesla owners with gradual software rollouts, the owners in Europe go from Autopilot, which is an old technological stack which bares no resemblance for current FSD capablities, to a V14.3 FSD (Supervised), which should allow for interventionless drives across thousands of kilometres.
So even an European like myself (it’s true, in case you’ve missed) is finally brought out of the stone age ✌

MODEL S & X FINAL RUN: SIGNATURE EDITION

Since Tesla is sunsetting the Model S & X for good, they’ve introduced an ultra-limited run (as in invite-only, 100 such Model X & 250 Model S will be ever made, and now apparently sold out) of Plaid Signature Editions for $159,420. Deliveries start May 2026.
It comes with a 303-mi range, 2.5s 0-60mph for the Model X and 309 miles and 1.99s 0-60mph for the Model S, and features lifetime-everything (FSD, Supercharging, connectivity, etc).
The real distinction is, however, the design details like:
Garnet Red Paint
22" Machina Wheels (21" Velarium Wheels for S)
White Premium Interior
Yoke wheel
Gold Tesla T badge
Signature liftgate appliqué
Gold Plaid Badge in the rear

Signature Edition key fobs

Plaid Puddle Lamp & Signature dool sill

Signature Dash Badging with Unique Edition Numbering

Matching Garnet Red Door Handles
Carbon Ceramic Brakes with Gold Calipers

Gold Plaid Seat Badging + Gold Piping + Alcantara Sport Seats

And an Interior Lighting Sequence. Probably a few smaller perks we still don’t know of, too.
TESLA NEWS

Don’t get too excited folks, BUT
Tesla is reportedly back to developing a smaller, lower-cost SUV. Reuters’ sources claimed that the new model would be shorter, lighter, and significantly cheaper than existing vehicles, including the Model 3 RWD and Model Y RWD.
Tesla has reportedly approached suppliers in recent weeks to discuss specifications and manufacturing for an all-new compact SUV. The vehicle is expected to measure about 14 feet in length, making it smaller than the regular Model Y, which is 15.7 feet long.
The problem here is that Reuters have floated this type of news many times in the past, so we can’t be really sure of what we’re seeing here.
On the other side,
Model Y L (or something like it) actually seems very close in Giga Texas
Apparent Model Y L bodies spotted at Gigafactory Texas during the facility’s ongoing ~2-week Model Y production pause are fueling speculation that Tesla may be preparing to build the vehicle in the United States.
Recent drone footage from veteran watcher Joe Tegtmeyer shows multiple covered Model Y units being transported around the Giga Texas complex. Similar to past sightings, the car bodies look longer than the standard Model Y.

Quick takes:
Video tip: Ashlee Vance got access to the Tesla Semi factory and uploaded the full 10-minute video now. I especially liked seeing the battery marriage happening, wish we could have more inside shots. Tesla also shared some images with caption “Hammer Down” on X. I wonder if that means they are done prototyping and ready for mass production?

Tesla has reportedly added China-based Sunwoda to its global battery supply chain. The move expands Tesla’s supplier base while introducing new LFP battery technology focused on faster charging. That’d make it the fifth (or sixth, depending on how you count) battery supplier for Tesla. Sunwoda ranks as the 8th-largest battery maker in China as of February this year.
The Tesla Model Y was the top-selling passenger vehicle in China in March 2026, with 39,827 retail registrations, as per data published by industry tracker Yiche. The result places the Model Y ahead of both domestic EVs and traditional ICE models. It outpaced competitors across sedans, SUVs, and MPVs.
Fun fact: Elon ended up reposting our article on this through Sawyer again. Might’ve had something to do with the KING in our thumbnail 😂 :

ROBOTAXI, FSD & CHIPS

Intel CEO, Lip-Bu Tan
Intel has joined the Terafab project, which is aimed at achieving 1 terawatt per year of AI compute output.
Intel said its manufacturing capabilities will support the Terafab’s production target, which is designed to supply chips for Tesla’s autonomous systems and humanoid robot program, alongside compute infrastructure for AI data centers.

First time we’ve seen the real AI5 chip.
Elon Musk announced that Tesla has taped out its next-generation AI5 chip and shared the first real-world photo of the new hardware. Taped out means it’s now ready for mass production.
Musk said AI5 could become “one of the most produced AI chips ever,” with manufacturing support from TSMC and Samsung. He also confirmed that AI6, Dojo3, and “other exciting chips” are in development.
Elon also gave a (surprising?) answer to the question whether these chips go into the cars:

Tesla has begun rolling out FSD (Supervised) v14.3, with users reporting noticeably faster reactions and smoother driving behavior. Here are some early videos on it.
Tesla said the update delivers a 20% improvement in reaction time, alongside broader upgrades to its neural network training and perception systems. Here are the full release notes:

Tesla Insurance: Tesla’s new Safety Score 3.0 will have a perfect score of 100 automatically applied for every mile that is driven with FSD (Supervised) enabled.
OPTIMUS

Tesla China VP Wang Hao stated that Giga Shanghai could help unlock the mass production of Optimus humanoid robots, calling the facility a “golden key to solving this challenge.”
“Like other Tesla factories, Giga Shanghai can shoulder important responsibilities in manufacturing all-new products, including robots. We are highly confident in welcoming the arrival of a new era of robots.” — Tesla China VP Wang Hao
Optimus is expected to be Tesla’s highest volume product, with its pilot line in the Fremont Factory being capable of producing 1 million units per year when ramped. A larger production line in Giga Texas is expected to produce 10 million per year.
TESLA ENERGY

You can now calculate how much it’d cost to deploy Superchargers on your site specifically, across the US.
Tesla has introduced transparent pricing and a profitability calculator for its Supercharger for Business program, giving site hosts a clearer view of likely costs, returns, and payback timelines.
The important, or rather even unparalleled bit in our industry here, is that Tesla gives away as much of real-world information as possible, from the hardware pricing to all cost and utilization estimations based on the zip code entered, before you have to click that “get a quote” button.
And Tesla leverages its own data across 36,500+ stalls in the US for it all.
The tool works for the US now, but Tesla says it’ll soon expand to other countries in which it operates.
The reason Tesla created this tool?
“We launched Supercharger for Business in 2025 to help companies get charging right. We found simplicity and transparency to be a problem in this industry.
We're now sharing pricing and a financial calculator to help make informed decisions. The goal is to accelerate investments, clarity and charging ubiquity.”

a sample of how Tesla uses it’s own vast data to inform
Tesla offers full stack for Businesses for $0.10/kWh
While this pricing was known around the industry for a while, I believe it’s the first time we’ve seen Tesla put it out there publicly.
Tesla’s Supercharger for Business offering includes a full-stack operational package alongside hardware deployment.
For revenue-generating sites, Tesla will charge an all-inclusive $0.10/kWh fee, and included is (see the full list on Tesla’s site):

Tesla announced a unique Supercharger for Business site in Belleville, Kansas. The site stands out because it uses V3 Supercharger stalls, rather than the newer V4 hardware typically seen in recent third-party deployments.
AC Customs, the site owner, stated that the Belleville installation used some of Tesla’s final available V3 Supercharger units, which were offered at discounted pricing for Tesla for Business clients.
