Tesla Space #41: ⚡ Tesla's wide gap among EV makers

... and all you need to know about Tesla and Elon-related companies this week.

If this newsletter was forwarded to you, sign up here.

Welcome to the Tesla Space newsletter, the 41st issue.

I’m afraid today’s issue won’t be one of those barely-fits-in-your-inbox newsletters.

You see, in exactly half an hour from the moment you received this email, I (the guy writing this, Jaan), am getting married.

Yes, I scheduled this email ahead of time… the marriage probably wouldn’t last too long otherwise.

I’ll be back with our full reporting again next week. But I believe today’s newsletter still has some substance for you:

  • Our videos on Dojo and Neuralink;

  • Tesla will give Semi test drives in Europe and I’m going;

  • My deep EV sales report unveiled Tesla’s massive lead;

  • Your poll answers about what cars you drive.

We also have great news from our sponsor for all the Tesla owners reading this — which I know are plenty considering last week’s poll answers.

Shall we?

— Jaan

Now this is the great new partnership we have that I teased you about last week. We were happy to create the first exclusive news article on our new sponsor, DIMO. Here’s the story and how the drivers among you can benefit:

TESLA SPACE IS SPONSORED BY DIMO

Many automakers struggle with issues of security, privacy, and openness. Yet Tesla continues to lead the way by officially supporting robust connections with privacy-first open mobility platforms like DIMO.

DIMO gives users access to their own car data, allowing them to choose which data to share and with whom.

Now that Tesla has enabled a direct integration with DIMO [see the exclusive news release on our Tesla Space blog here], Tesla owners get additional benefits, starting with:

  • Earning as much as $15/month in rewards just for being connected;

  • New fine-grained permission control;

  • Access additional commands within the DIMO app (such as opening doors, unlocking the trunk, etc.);

  • Advanced widgets for better car health tracking.

DIMO is free to use and also enables you to track the location of all of your cars, including non-Teslas, in one app.

You can connect your car to DIMO in a few minutes by downloading the app.
Use Tesla Space’s referral code “9PINF2” to get an extra 50 DIMO tokens when you connect your car.

THE VIDEOS

The two musk-see videos from Tesla Space this week:

The Real Reason Elon Musk is Building The DOJO Supercomputer:

Neuralink Reveals MAJOR New Update
Neuralink’s second patient plays counter-strike with just his mind, The Tesla Semi is blowing up, two Cybertrucks are headed for the End of the Road in the Arctic, and Tesla referrals are back.

Now, if you’ve watched through the videos, I still put together a few tidbits for you today ↓

TESLA, GLOBALLY

Last week, I told you about spying the first two Tesla Semis in Europe, at Giga Berlin — and how they’re likely on the way to Hannover for an industry event on Sept 17-22th called the IAA Transportation.

Dan Priestley, the guy we’ve seen taking the lead in the Semi Program, will give two talks at the event, one a keynote speech, and the other called “Scaling Semi Electrification: A Case Study with Pepsico”.

I also went through the event program and found that Tesla will be giving test drives of the Semi there.

So naturally after seeing this I went all in and secured a press ticket to the event. I’m flying in and I will report to you exclusively what I learn about the Tesla Semi from the event on the 17th!

I won’t be leaving the event without a test drive. As a wild card, maybe I’ll be able to do a quick interview with Dan. If you have semi-specific questions for him, do let me know and I’ll report back.

TESLA STILL BEST-SELLING

So far in 2024, despite all the media spelling for Tesla, it is still the best-selling EV out there across all regions.

I put together a report on my other publication for global EV sales across 54 countries in the first half of 2024. It took me over a week to find them all, but I did it.

You can see the whole report here for free, plenty to discover for you through the breakdowns and graphs, but I’ll bring out one key chart about Tesla:

Yes, Tesla has taken in the first half of 2024 the exact same spots it did for full year of 2023:

  • Tesla Model Y is #1 in China, Europe, and the US

  • Tesla Model 3 is #2 in Europe and the US

(BYD also had two models in 2-3 last year, in Europe Volvo EX30 switched out VW ID.4, and in the US Mustang Mach-E switched out the Chevy Bolt)

The gaps between Tesla and others are also quite wild.
In Europe, first half of 2024:

  1. Tesla Model Y: 102,730

  2. Tesla Model 3: 60,403

  3. Volvo EX30: 39,652

In the US, first half of 2024:

  1. Tesla Model Y: 198,030

  2. Tesla Model 3: 73,552

  3. Ford Mustang Mach-E 22,234

Here’s more ‘high-level’ knowledge about EV sales in January-June this year I gathered:

  • 4,590,947 battery-electric vehicles were sold in the world in the first half of 2024 (H1 2024).

  • 12.4% is how much EV sales grew globally in the first half of 2024, compared to H1 2023.

  • 36 markets saw EV sales grow compared to the first half of last year, yet 16 markets saw a decline.

  • 12% is the market share these 4.59M EVs took in total light-duty vehicles sold in the world. In other words,

  • Every 9th (well really every 8.33th) vehicle sold in the world was fully electric.

YOUR POLL ANSWERS

In our last week’s newsletter, I asked you all what cars do you drive.

There are over 7,000 of you reading this newsletter, and it was great to have 216 of you taking the time to vote (that’s actually a lot of answers for an email poll!). It was really great to read through all of the additional comments for context too. Thank you, everyone. Results:

113 out of 216 votes (52.3%) own at least one Tesla;
14 of you (6.5%) drive a non-Tesla EV
74 of you (34.3%) drive an ICE car
15 of you (7%) don’t drive a car at all.

From the comments, I also read quite a few of you have several Teslas already, and several of the combustion car owners plan to get an EV for their next car.

Next task:

Send us a picture of your Tesla or non-Tesla EV and we’ll feature all of them in next week’s newsletter! Also, add what you’ve named the car if you can.

(sorry, we can’t add combustion cars)

You can send the picture as a reply to this email, or upload it somewhere and send us the link as a reply here, to [email protected], or through our X account.

Thanks for reading today👏 ! We strive to be the most value-packed Tesla-related newsletter out there. Today’s issue was lighter than our normal, so I’ve got a more general question for you:

FEEDBACK: How are you liking the newsletter so far?

(leave me some words after voting, I read all of them)

Login or Subscribe to participate in polls.

Favorite feedback from last week: “I like that you don’t focus too much on what Elon says, after following him for many years I’ve learned his predictions don’t mean much. What’s actually happening is what matters!”

See you next week!

Jaan, Ted, and Sean
